Second Session of 8th Youth Parliament Pakistan kicks off tomorrow

Islamabad, July 19: The second session of 8th Youth Parliament Pakistan (www.youthparliament.pk) starts on Wednesday July 20, 2016 in Islamabad with a set of new 60 Members selected for the 8th Youth Parliament Pakistan. The second session will span for 5 days i.e. from July 20-24, 2016. 

National Security Advisor, Mr. Nasser Khan Janjua would address the Members on the growing challenges to the National Security of Pakistan on July 22, 2016. He would also hold an interactive session with the Members of Youth Parliament Pakistan.  In order to train the young women and men in democratic and political affairs of Pakistan, apart from engaging them in the election process and parliamentary practices, Youth Parliament Secretariat has also arranged a visit of the Members to the Election Commission of Pakistan on July 21, 2016. They will be given a briefing on the Election procedure.

Elections for the post of Leader of the House, Leader of the Opposition and Deputy Speaker will be carried out on the first day of the Session. Young Members will get engaged in the voting process and elect their respective leaders through ‘secret ballot’.

The 8th Youth Parliament Pakistan (www.youthparliament.pk) will give young members a fast-paced comprehensive orientation and training on democratic and political affairs of Pakistan, legislative processes and leadership skills.

After the successful conclusion of the term of 7 earlier Youth Parliaments (in 2007, 2008-2009, 2010, 2012, 2013, 2014 & 2015), the 8th Youth Parliament Pakistan comprising 240 young Members has been selected from across the country. The Youth Parliament Pakistan has its own 2- party system, Leader of the House and Opposition, as well as an augmented system of Parliamentary Committees with Committee Chairpersons. Following five (5) Youth Standing Committees will be working on specific policy areas during the 4 sessions:

  1. Youth Standing Committee on National Security & Foreign Affairs
  2. Youth Standing Committee on Right to Information
  3. Youth Standing Committee on Political & Electoral Reforms
  4. Youth Standing Committee on Performance of Local Governments
  5. Youth Standing Committee on Finance

The Youth Parliament Pakistan is an initiative conceived, planned and facilitated by PILDAT (www.pildat.org). An independent Steering Committee of Youth Parliament oversees the selection process and the effective functioning of the Youth Parliament Pakistan. The Committee comprises Senator S. M. Zafar, Chairman Youth Parliament Pakistan Steering Committee; Mr. Wazir Ahmed Jogezai, Former Deputy Speaker, National Assembly of Pakistan; Ms. Nafeesa Inayatullah Khattak, MNA; Mr. Shehryar Afridi, MNA; Senator Dr. Karim Ahmed Khawaja, Member Senate of Pakistan, Mr. Omar Ayub Khan, Former MNA/State Minister of Finance, Mr. Ghazi Salahuddin, Senior Journalist & Literary Figure and Mr. Ahmed Bilal Mehboob, Secretary General Youth Parliament Pakistan/President PILDAT.

The 8th Youth Parliament Pakistan is supported by the Danish International Development Agency, Government of Denmark as recognition of the importance of young people’s involvement in democracy and democratic practices.
